Drawing from the rich cultural and geographic influences of his Californian roots, Greg Miller delves into his relationship with the spaces he inhabits to convey a distinct urban experience. Using a combination of paint and collage, he constructs and deconstructs, exploring the contradictions, ambiguities, and truths between urban streetscapes and history.
Miller’s art is both clever and cool, featuring abstracted backgrounds of drips, patterns, and phrases, and layers that peel back to study the impermanence of our surroundings. His large-scale paintings and installations make the fleeting aspects of American culture tangible, evoking nostalgia and prompting viewers to appreciate the transient beauty in everyday life. His use of materials like paper, wood, and natural elements adds a sense of liveliness and depth, highlighting the fragile heroism in the temporary.
Miller’s work is featured in numerous museum and private collections that have traveled internationally, including those curated by the Charles Saatchi Collection and the Frederick R. Weisman Collection. His writings, photography, and paintings were published in The Get Go in 2010, and a comprehensive monograph, Signs of the Nearly Actual, was published in 2008.
Miller divides his time between New York, NY, Fredericksburg, TX, and Los Angeles, CA.
